Let’s start at the beginning. How did Duron Ontario get its start?
Duron Ontario Ltd. was founded back in 1959. It started small, mostly delivering concretel projects in Ontario. In those days, we focused on basic construction services. But over time, we saw there was a growing need for more specialised work—things like flooring, waterproofing and restoration. That’s where we found our place.
Your company has worked on some major projects. Can you tell us about one that really stands out?
Definitely, the Scotiabank Arena project is one we’re very proud of. We built the concrete slab for the ice rink for the Toronto Maple Leafs. That’s not something many companies can say in North America. We also laid the concrete slab for the rink at their practice arena in Etobicoke. Those projects require absolute precision. You cannot afford mistakes when you’re dealing with something as complex as an NHL-standard ice rink.
What’s the key to doing those kinds of high-pressure projects?
It comes down to expertize and preparation. We’ve got a team of highly skilled workers who specialize in concrete, terrazzo, mastic and epoxy. Most of them have been in the trade for decades. We also lean heavily on innovation—developing new methods and technologies to improve results. For us, every detail matters.
How did you grow from a local business to working with clients like Canadian Tire, General Motors and even Singapore Airlines?
We focused on doing the job right, every single time. That built trust. Clients started coming back, and word spread. Our list of projects grew—from local work to larger national contracts, and eventually to international clients. We’ve worked for the Royal Bank of Canada, the Royal Ontario Museum, Metrolinx, the Toronto Transit Commission, the Toronto District School Board and many others.
You’ve mentioned innovation. How important is that to your business?
It’s vital. Construction isn’t just about materials—it’s also about methods. We’re constantly looking for better ways to work. We even participate in setting National Standards in our industry. That keeps us at the forefront. Our work isn’t just about today—it’s about building for the long term.

We believe in fair pay and dignity at work. Our team is unionized, and we’re proud of that. Construction is tough work. We respect traditional craftsmanship. Our terrazzo work, for example, requires skills that haven’t changed much over the years. But we also embrace new tools and methods that improve outcomes. It’s about blending the two—knowing when to stick with proven techniques and when to adapt to something new.
What advice would you give to others hoping to build a long-lasting career in construction?
Be patient and consistent. There’s no shortcut. Focus on learning your trade well and earning trust. Stick to high standards and don’t cut corners. That’s the only way to succeed in this business over the long term.
